Brenda Risquez is deliberate in her use of texture, density, and coloration in her boldly embroidered portraits impressed by pals and popular culture icons. Various patches of lengthy, single-stitch rows and rounded tufts map onto the topics’ faces, many of which show the textile artist’s affinity for pronounced, single-hued cheeks. Her hoop-bound portraits are expressive and dotted with playful components, like a jaw outlined in pink or highlights stitched in brilliant, geometric shapes.

Textiles have performed an outsized position in Risquez’s inventive trajectory—she holds levels in Nice Arts from the College of Granada and Textile Artwork from the College of Artwork of Granada—though she solely began embroidering within the final 5 years. At present, she teaches at Workshop Granada and is exploring a range of methods involving cloth portray and sample design.
