Minecraft Film Trailer Reactions Examine CGI to ‘Unsightly’ Sonic the Hedgehog

The reactions to the trailer for A Minecraft Movie are pouring out, and they are far from promising. People are criticizing the CGI, with some even drawing an unflattering comparison between the animals in the Minecraft trailer and Sonic’s humanoid appearance in the early promotional material for the 2020 movie Sonic the Hedgehog. Here’s what fans are saying about the trailer.

A Minecraft Movie trailer’s CGI and animal designs criticized by fans

A Minecraft Movie trailer debuted on Wednesday, August 4, and has since garnered considerable criticism for the CGI and animal design.

For instance, Forbes’ Paul Tassi called the trailer “horrifying.” The reaction of a significant portion of the fandom was also negative. An X (formerly, Twitter) user with the handle @tommyinnit even shared side-by-side photos of the humanoid Sonic and the sheep from the Minecraft trailer. “First sonic,” they wrote in the caption. “Now Minecraft Sheep. realistic animation will ruin us all.”

Some X users further criticized the animation in the trailer. “I think what makes me more upset about the way the Minecraft Movie looks is the fact we literally had the PERFECT blue print of what it should’ve been like with this,” @chonzodraws posted as a caption for a trailer of the Minecraft movie. “I would’ve eaten up two hours of this with a good story and dialogue,” they added.

After Sonic’s initial design for Sonic the Hedgehog drew a widespread negative response, the filmmakers decided to change it. These alterations received a much more positive reaction. Although, not all the responses to the trailer for A Minecraft Movie have been entirely unfavorable.

According to The Verge’s Andrew Webster, the imagery in the trailer was “unsettling,” but added that the movie “looks like some silly family fun, with lots of one-liners, large-scale battles, and Jack Black exclaiming “I am Steve!” very proudly.”

A Minecraft Movie comes out in US theaters in IMAX on April 4, 2025. The cast includes Jack Black as Steve, Jason Momoa as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, Emma Myers as Natalie, and Danielle Brooks as Dawn.
