Created and written by Joe Barton, the sci-fi thriller series centers around George, who begins doubting his sanity when he realizes he’s living the same day repeatedly. After meeting a man called Archie, he is forced to join an organisation that can manipulate time and prevent mass extinction events. Although the series was popular among fans, it never saw the third season, and here’s why.
Why was The Lazarus Project canceled before Season 3?
Sky canceled The Lazarus Project after two seasons, though no official reason was publicly disclosed.
The Lazarus Project was a beloved series among its fans, becoming the most-watched series during its first season. It received acclaim for its engaging storyline, strong performances, sharp twists, action sequences, visuals, and unique concept.
In 2022, the series also received an award in the Best Special Effects category at the Royal Television Society Craft & Design Awards. Paapa Essiedu, who played George, was also nominated for the Best Leading Actor category at the British Academy Television Awards in 2024. Moreover, it was nominated in three categories at the BAFTA, ultimately winning the 2023 Best Television Drama title.
However, fans were particularly disappointed when Season 2 ended on a cliffhanger, which ignited their hopes for another installment, which never came. Despite the show’s popularity and its unresolved ending, it was not renewed for a third season.
A representative from Sky broke the news officially to Radio Times. They said, “The Lazarus Project has brought audiences jaw-dropping action and time-bending storylines across two seasons, and we are incredibly proud of this BAFTA-winning series. Whilst we won’t be commissioning another season, we would like to thank the incredible team who made this show possible.”
