The upcoming Mandalorian & Grogu movie was originally going to be Season 4 of the original series, with Jon Favreau having already worked on the scripts. In a recent interview, the director talked about what could have been the fourth season of The Mandalorian series, revealing that it would have ultimately tied into Ahsoka Season 2.
Jon Favreau talks original plans for Mandalorian Season 4
Speaking with SFX Magazine, Jon Favreau detailed how he transformed scripts for what was going to be The Mandalorian Season 4 into a screenplay for a feature-length film.
“You can’t just take those scripts and turn them into a movie,” the Iron Man director said before adding, “There were a lot of characters. It assumed you’d watched the whole show, and it was teeing up what was happening moving into [the second season of ] Ahsoka. It was about Grand Admiral Thrawn and following the larger storyline [of this era of the Star Wars timeline].”
He continued, “This is a completely different medium, so I had to start from scratch, essentially. There were certain things I wanted to pursue, like the idea of Grogu being the Mandalorian’s apprentice. As long as you understand the archetypes of this hardened warrior with their vulnerable young apprentice, you’ll know these characters well, even if you’ve never seen the show. But there’s still a lot of Star Wars in there. You’re going to see where things are going [in the wider universe], but that doesn’t diminish from the experience of watching it as a standalone film.”
Notably, plans for The Mandalorian Season 4 had to make room for The Mandalorian & Grogu movie following the 2023 SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. The highly anticipated film is currently on track to hit theaters on May 22, 2026. Details about the release date window for Ahsoka Season 2 currently remain under wraps, however.
