The Mandalorian and Grogu’s Field Place of work May just Be a Superstar Wars Worst, However Disney Has a Plan

The Mandalorian and Grogu is set to usher in the return of the world of Star Wars to the movie theaters, though its box office performance could be the franchise’s worst outing yet. Disney is hoping to fix that.

What is The Mandalorian and Grogu’s box office projections?

According to a new report from Deadline, the upcoming Star Wars film is tracking to earn $80+ million at its opening weekend over Memorial Day. At face value, this would be an extremely great opening, but for a Star Wars project, it would actually be the worst in the entire franchise. The current low mark for a Star Wars live-action opening is 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, which debuted to $103 million over Memorial Day weekend.

Despite the low mark, Deadline notes that Disney is hoping to broaden its audience ahead of the release. Currently, Deadline notes that the movie is skewing more toward an audience of men over 25. However, Disney hopes to get more families into the movie and will begin showing off the first 20 minutes of the movie in Imax theaters beginning on May 4, which has become known as “May the Fourth” day, a celebration of Star Wars.

The Mandalorian and Grogu reunites Star Wars fans with Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin and Grogu, also known as Baby Yoda. The movie is also set to star Sigourney Weaver, Jonny Coyne, White, and many more.

The Mandalorian and Grogu will be the first theatrically released Star Wars movie since 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The only other Star Wars movie that has a release date at this time is Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter, which arrives on May 28, 2027. That film recently started production and will star Ryan Gosling, Aaron Pierre, Amy Adams, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Flynn Gray, and more.

Lucasfilm’s The Mandalorian and Grogu arrives in U.S. theaters on May 22, 2026. The first three seasons of The Mandalorian are currently available to stream on Disney+.
