Tom Holland has walked back his comments about retiring from playing Spider-Man. In 2021, Holland made headlines after he said, “If I’m playing Spider-Man after I’m 30, I’ve done something wrong.” The actor turned 30 this month, just ahead of Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s release in July.
What did Tom Holland say about retiring as the MCU’s Spider-Man?
When asked about the 2021 quote, Holland told GQ, “It’s funny, I saw that quote pop up somewhere recently and I kind of reeled, because I was trying to remember what I meant. I think the point of it is that I would love to pass the baton on, and I haven’t achieved that yet. It’s definitely something that we talk about a lot at the studio. So maybe I need to change the quote to 37… could also have been trying to leverage Sony and scare them into thinking I wasn’t going to do Spider-Man 4 now that I had a new deal on the horizon.”
Holland also suggested that his previous comments were perhaps a strategic decision. He added, “So I don’t know what it could have been. It could’ve been part of a strategy to create fear…I think the truth is that playing Spider-Man has been the joy of my life. I now kind of stand on the plinth of like, I’ll do it for as long as they’ll have me.”

Holland has also publicly stated that his desire to help usher in the next generation of Spider-people into the MCU. The first trilogy followed Peter Parker’s journey through high school, and with Brand New Day, fans expect the character to be attending college, despite the erasure of the character’s personal identity in the last movie. Holland was also creatively involved in the making of the new movie, having pitched one of its central ideas himself.
As for the future, it appears Holland may have mapped out Spider-Man’s MCU adventures well ahead. The upcoming movie unites Parker with the grittier side of the MCU as he crosses paths with the Punisher. The film is also expected to feature Spider-Man battling a savage Hulk.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be released in theaters on July 31, 2026.
