Common Pixar Fan Concept May’ve Been Debunked

The Japanese trailer for Toy Story 5 has debunked one of the animated franchise’s popular fan theories. The latest video surprised fans with the unexpected reveal of Jessie’s original owner, Emily. Before this, the character’s face wasn’t shown during Jessie’s heartbreaking flashback scene in 1999’s Toy Story 2. With Emily’s surprise full appearance in Toy Story 5, it looks like the plot twist that many fans have been expecting for the character will not happen at all.

What Pixar fan theory might get debunked in Toy Story 5?

For over a decade now, fans have speculated on the real identity of Jessie’s owner, Emily. During the iconic “When She Loved Me” montage in Toy Story 2, Jessie shared fond memories of playing with Emily. However, after Emily became a teenager, she forgot about Jessie and decided to put her away in a donation box.

In 2014, Jon Negroni published a Toy Story fan theory claiming that Emily and Andy’s mom might be the same person. His theory became popular among fans online, who began uncovering fun details that might connect the two characters to each other. One of the clues they’ve found to support the theory was Andy’s red cowboy hat with white lace, which seemingly has a resemblance to Jessie and Emily’s hats. Fans speculated that Andy’s hat may actually belong to his mom since it would have made more sense if he received something similar to Woody’s hat if it were a new one. Fans have also speculated that Emily’s 1960s/1970s style bedroom would be a match for the present age of Andy’s mom.

However, now that Disney and Pixar have shared a full look at the real Emily in the latest Toy Story 5 video, it looks like the popular theory may finally be put to rest. The Japanese trailer shows that Emily clearly has distinct visual features from the character design of Andy’s mom. This will definitely disappoint some fans who have long been invested in seeing this potential plot twist come true, but debunking the theory also allows the creative team to deliver a much more satisfying closure to Emily and Jessie’s story.
