Evil Dead Wrath is the next entry in the iconic horror franchise set to release. Following 2026’s Evil Dead Burn, the movie now has much more pressure attached to it.
Ahead of Evil Dead Burn’s release, many assumed it would follow the footsteps of past entries in the modern era of Evil Dead. Both 2023’s Evil Dead Rise and 2013’s Evil Dead were box office smashes, grossing over $50 million for the horror franchise. Unfortunately, Burn doesn’t seem to be shaping up to earn as much.
While the movie has opened to $13 million domestically and $27 million globally, the movie’s domestic opening is much less than it was estimated to be. Despite being the third highest-earning movie in the franchise, Burn’s lackluster performance now puts some extra pressure on Wrath to keep the franchise afloat. Thankfully, Wrath does have some added benefit to it when it comes to that.
Evil Dead Wrath’s connection to the franchise could help it
While very little is known about Evil Dead Wrath at the moment, there are some big clues that suggest it could perform better than Burn. Namely, the fact that the movie is going back in time. Wrath, directed by The Last Stop in Yuma County’s Francis Galluppi, is set to take place in 1972, and act as a prequel to the very first Evil Dead, released in 1981.
While newer entries in the Evil Dead franchise have taken the horror films to the modern day, many of them have settled on featuring the Deadites in new settings. This includes places like an apartment building in Rise, to the evil creatures antagonizing a family in the latest film. However, with the project going back to its roots, it would be a great chance to reset the franchise a bit.
Since its inception, Evil Dead has featured stories that take place all over, including one loosely thrusting audiences into medieval times. With Wrath looking to take us back into the 70s, not only will it give audiences a chance to step back into the more isolated world of the original, but will also give Galluppi a chance to establish a different take on the Deadites, and explore maybe how they came to be in ways that haven’t been just yet.
Of course, a prequel also gives us a chance to see potential characters from the original movies that we haven’t seen much of in the new era. With Burn still likely to be seen as a success, the Evil Dead franchise isn’t going anymore, but a lot more rides on the future of it when Wrath comes out in 2028.
