Bella Ramsey‘s friendship with Pedro Pascal on “The Last of Us” generated plenty of buzz among fans, but the 22-year-old actor can’t seem to understand the fuss about it.
In a recent interview, Ramsey, who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, hinted that their relationship has changed and admitted it was “sort of weird to talk about it.”
They also discussed their sexuality, explaining that they’re not “100% straight,” and said they aren’t particularly bothered by being misgendered as long as people remain respectful.
Bella Ramsey suggested they and Pedro Pascal are no longer as close as they once appeared to be following the buzz they generated on “The Last of Us.” In a recent interview with The Guardian, the Emmy-nominated actor revealed that the pair are now “loosely in touch.”
Ramsey and Pascal’s relationship became a major talking point after the first installment of the hit series, in which his character, Joel, was tasked with escorting their character, Ellie, across the United States following the collapse of society caused by a mass fungal infection that turns its hosts into zombie-like creatures.
Pascal barely featured in Season 2, which saw the characters settle in Jackson, Wyoming, before Joel’s death. Reports claim Ramsey will also have a reduced presence in the upcoming Season 3 as the story shifts to Seattle and focuses heavily on Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever.
Ramsey And Pascal Were Once Much Closer
Asked if they’re still in touch, Ramsey said, “Yeah. But, like, yes, loosely in touch, yeah. But it feels like an entirely separate thing.”
According to the news outlet, they appeared somewhat exhausted by the topic. “People get invested in the characters,” they added, seemingly weary of the fuss surrounding their relationship. “I’m not sure. It’s sort of weird to talk about it… Let’s move on to a different topic.”
The comments strike a different tone from last year, when Ramsey spoke about their “deep-rooted connection,” while Pascal referred to them as his “blessing.”
Last year, both stars attended HBO’s Emmy nominees’ event, where they reunited onstage. Ramsey later revealed what their text exchanges typically looked like. “Most of our texts consist of, ‘Where in the world are you? I’m here, are you there? Oh, we just missed each other,’” they said.

Also at the event, the “Game of Thrones” actor opened up about how often they get questions about the “Materialists” star and praised him for his warmth.
“It’s, ‘How is Pedro Pascal? Is he as nice as he seems?’ That’s mostly what people ask me, and the answer is, ‘Yes,’” they told Variety.
In another interview with AP News, Ramsey explained that having less of Pascal around for Season 2 of the hit series was “sad,” adding that they missed him a lot.
“I love him very deeply and will forever, and so it was kind of sad to have less with him this season,” they said. Ramsey added, “I’ve definitely missed him, but I’m hoping that at some point down the line we’ll get to be together on set in a different dynamic, not as Ellie and Joel, but it’s sad — the idea that we might never be Ellie and Joel again.”
Ramsey Feels ‘Embarrassed’ About Buying A House At 22
Elsewhere in their chat with The Guardian, Ramsey touched on several other topics, including their upcoming projects, sexuality, and the guilt they feel about being able to buy a house at 22.
Ramsey, who has been working since they were 11, explained that their success makes them feel guilty about achieving milestones that would normally take much longer, such as owning a home.
“It feels very wrong! You’re not supposed to do that until you’re older,” they said. “I’ve done it a bit early. I started working when I was 11, and I’m now 22, so it’s been 10 years, and I guess people maybe start working when they’re 21 and then buy a house when they’re 31, so I don’t know.”
“Buying a house is impossible now, and it’s only because I ended up in this industry, that pays people too much money, that I’ve been able to do it,” they added. “It just feels like a glitch in the system. I feel so embarrassed by it.”

Ramsey has been open about their gender identity, telling The New York Times in 2023 that they would tick a box marked “non-binary” if asked. However, they admitted they weren’t prepared for how much of a talking point their revelation would become or the debate that would follow.
They said being “in the middle” was simply a “helpful descriptor” for them, but it soon became a widely debated issue that appeared to overwhelm them.
“I wasn’t aware of the impact of that, both positively and negatively. But I think the positive impact outweighs the negative, in terms of being visible or giving a name to an experience,” they said.
Ramsey revealed that people often see them and use “she” for them, but said they aren’t particularly hung up on pronouns. “It’s just not a big deal as long as you’re respectful, and I think if somebody does correct you, then you respect that and you try your best. And so, I’m pretty chill about it,” they said.
