In 2026, the debate continues to rage between Star Trek fans over whether The Next Generation or the original series is the best way to go for a new viewer. Both have their obvious benefits, with Next Generation being a much more polished offering for the modern fan, while the original still has all the charm and the relationship between Kirk, McCoy, and Spock.
Both are absolutely worth your time, but Next Generation seems to be more at the forefront of people’s minds right now and, as testament to that, a new physical release is on the way that should prove very interesting to those who currently collect Magic: The Gathering, or are planning to start with the upcoming Star Trek collaboration.
Heo GroupAs first reported by ICv2, Heo Group has revealed Squaroes – Star Trek: The Next Generation, new Ultimate Guard collectible deck boxes that are set to hit stores for the first time on October 13, 2026.
Though it hasn’t been stated specifically, the timing of this release coincides perfectly with the upcoming Star Trek drop for Magic: The Gathering, with these deck boxes designed to accommodate cards from that set comfortably. It is also the second time the company has created a similar product after a run based around the original series released in 2025.
Characters showcased on the deck boxes include Captain Picard, Data, William Riker, Geordi La Forge, Worf, Deanna Troi, Dr. Beverley Crusher, Locutus, and a Borg Drone, with the latter serving as the rarest and most difficult to get.
At the same time, Heo are also planning to release a Collectors Case 800+ – Borg Cube, which as the name suggests, can house a genuinely staggering 800+ double-sleeved cards.
Those should serve as the perfect storage solution for the big hitters in the upcoming set and rest assured there are plenty of those if you’re looking to secure some pricey cars for your collection.
The ones which are bound to draw the most attention are the new signature cards which are hand signed by the members of the cast you play the characters. This is the first time in history that Magic: The Gathering has done anything like this, with the closest approximation from previous sets being the signatures of the artists who created the illustrations on the cards. Those are also said to be highly limited, with only 250 available for each character, which is bound to drive the price up even further.
Outside of the physical, there is also a new Star Trek feature film adaptation in development right now at Paramount. Directed and written by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, it’s set to be a full creative reset for the franchise, though what exactly that’s going to look like remains unclear. Unfortunately, production isn’t even set to start on that until next year, so we’ll be waiting a long time before we actually get to play it.
