Star Trek: The Next Generation is arguably the best version of the show to watch in the big 2026, striking a great balance between the dynamics pioneered by the original series, and the better effects and technology available at the time. The adventures of Picard and his crew are very much rooted in the cultural canon now, and the show’s legacy is still felt across the franchise today.
While we aren’t getting a direct reboot any time soon, shows like Star Trek: Picard and retrospective documentary series The Center Seat have continued to carry the torch, and it remains a hugely important part of the overall tapestry. Now, one element of the show in particular is about to return, and in a place that you might not have expected.
As first reported by TrekMovie.com, long-running massive multiplayer game Star Trek Online is getting involved with the 60th anniversary excitement by laying out a major roadmap for the coming months. As part of that, December sees the arrival of the Tarellian Plague Ship into the game.
The story of the Tarellian ships are actually some of the more interesting in Star Trek’s wider lore. They were essentially used to carry Tarellian refugees, following the Tarellian Civil War. Almost every star system and planet turned them away out of fear that they could be hosting the Tarellian plague, meaning that by 2360 (when they are first discovered by Picard and his crew), there’s only one known ship left in existence.
It will be interesting to see if their background lore will be incorporated into their addition into the game, and if they will be similarly rare, with no news yet on how the developer plans to incorporate the new ship.
There is plenty going on outside of that in Star Trek Online as well, as Star Trek: Strange New Worlds star Ethan Peck adds his voice to the upcoming season, Star Trek Online: Rediscovered. That season is set to feature Spock’s appearances through the ages, with Peck as Lieutenant Spock and Piotr Michael as Captain Spock.
The likeness and voice of the legendary Leonard Nimoy will also continue to feature in a reduced capacity, after the actor’s death back in 2015. The full roadmap also contains a bunch of other exciting upcoming events and additions to the game, in what could be the tonic that it needs to really get players flooding in again for the first time in a while.
Outside of that, Paramount is actively developing a new movie that is designed to serve as a hard reboot for the Star Trek franchise after the most recent trilogy. At the same time, their plans for television adaptations are less clear, with the main focus being on seeing Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy through to their conclusions.
