Netflix has released the trailer for Hunting Gary Glitter, a documentary tracing the pursuit of the former pop star by journalists and survivors who helped expose the child sexual abuse concealed behind the U.K. musician’s chart-topping career.
Launching Oct. 14, the film follows Glitter — real name Paul Francis Gadd — from his 1997 conviction through years on the run and eventual incarceration. The documentary tracks journalists as they chase the fugitive across Cuba, Cambodia and Vietnam, determined to bring his crimes to light, while survivors speak about their experiences.
The disgraced performer is serving a 16-year prison sentence following his 2015 conviction for attempted rape, unlawful intercourse and indecent assault. He was briefly released on probation in February 2023 after completing half of his sentence, but was quickly sent back to jail after he was caught on film using a smartphone and reportedly asking how to access the “dark web.”
Hunting Gary Glitter is directed by Sebastian Smith, known for Locked Up Abroad, and produced by Cammy Millard. The film has been more than three years in the making, with Voltage TV’s Sanjay Singhal serving as executive producer.
Voltage previously produced Savile: Portrait of a Predator, an ITV examination of Jimmy Savile, whose extensive abuse was only exposed after his death in 2011. Glitter’s case, by contrast, unfolded publicly while he was alive, with the former glam rock figure’s celebrity increasingly inseparable from the crimes that destroyed it.
