Madonna and Charli xcx have finally taken their increasingly public mutual admiration into the studio. The pop provocateurs have joined forces for “Danceteria Afterhours,” a new track inspired by Madonna’s recent Confessions II album track “Danceteria.” It was produced by longtime Madonna collaborator Stuart Price and will be released Thursday (Sept. 24) via Warner Records.
The collaboration follows Madonna and Charli’s CLUB CONFESSIONS party with Saint Laurent during Paris Fashion Week, along with a string of playful social media exchanges between the two artists that sent fans into a tizzy. According to the announcement, “Danceteria Afterhours” channels the fearless beginnings and influences that helped shape both artists’ singular careers, bringing together Madonna’s foundational dance music sensibility with Charli’s boundary pushing approach to pop.
“We went to Paris and we just couldn’t stop hanging out with each other,” Charli told BBC 6 in June about her budding friendship with Madonna. “And it was fab! She is so interested in really talking about the music that she makes, and how and why, and I found it very inspiring to hang out with her.”
“Danceteria Afterhours” will also be available in three limited-edition CD configurations. It will emerge days before Madonna returns to the MTV Video Music Awards, where she will open Sunday’s ceremony with her first performance at the show in 23 years. It will be her fifth VMA performance, more than any other artist in the awards show’s history, and she leads this year’s field with a career-high 13 nominations.
Meanwhile, Charli xcx has played the first three shows on the North American arena leg of her tour supporting the album Music, Fashion, Film and will be back onstage tonight in Toronto.
