The X-Men franchise has introduced a new kind of leader. Rest easy, Cyclops fans, that doesn’t mean Scott Summers is going anywhere as the stalwart head of the X-Men’s paramilitary operations, but the franchise is refining the hierarchy of the X-Men as an organization. Which means one of the team’s most ferocious fighters is getting their due with a sick-sounding new title.
The X-Men are currently battling the villainous organization known as 3K, who are led by “the Chairman.” Fans who have been keeping up with X-canon know the Chairman’s true identity; we won’t spoil it up front here, but let’s just say that the Big Bad has a long history with Cyclops and their stories are intentionally mirrored right now. Including with the subtle confirmation that Cyclops is, essentially, the “Chairman Emeritus” of the X-Men.
That is because he has appointed Psylocke, one of his deadliest and most loyal lieutenants, to run day-to-day field operations. It is a prominent position for Psylocke, as a character, but it is also a notable new evolution of how the X-Men function.
Warning! Spoilers ahead for X-Men #39!
Psylocke Is Officially The “Executive Officer” Of Cyclops’ X-Men
In X-Men #39, Psylocke has led a field mission to Philadelphia to confront 3K. Leaving her lover John Greycrow behind, along with team healer Xorn, at their base in Alaska, the Factory. The preview released by Marvel for the issue features a tense conversation between Greycrow and Xorn, in which two things stand out.
First, Xorn reminds Greycrow that he isn’t officially a team member, meaning he doesn’t “get to vote on missions.” That’s not new information, exactly; the X-Men have become increasingly democratic in the post-Xavier era, and under Cyclops’ leadership, the members of the team collectively have a voice in what they do. It does set up a note of tension, though, which could pay dividends in future stories, between full-on X-Men members and their non-voting allies.

The other thing that stands out is Xorn expressly naming Psylocke as “the Executive Officer of the X-Men field team.” It’s an official rank, fleshing out the paramilitary parameters of the team. In the short-term, it creates some distance between Cyclops and the team, and furthers his parallels with his old friend and current nemesis, 3K’s Chairman. (No avoiding spoilers here: the Chairman is another original X-Men, Beast, who went dark during the Krakoan Era.) That said, it also has potential long-term implications that are worth considering for a moment.
Psylocke Gets Her Due As X-Men’s “Executive Officer,” But Could It Lead To More?
The X-Men franchise has played with different levels of institutionality over the years. There have been times when they have been run like a full-on corporation, and during the Krakoan Era mutantkind had its own autonomous nation-state. Cyclops’ branch of the current X-Men takes cues from both those past organizational structures, and the “Executive Officer” title is the latest example. It is a formalization of a role, and an officially recognized position. And where there is hierarchy, there is potential for turnover.
Meaning, the potential upward and downward mobility among the X-Men’s ranks. In fact, Marvel has foreshadowed a fall from grace for Cyclops, which will seemingly find him removed from his current leadership role, creating a power vacuum. The X-Men’s internal politics are about take center stage in the upcoming X-Men #43, when the team votes for a new leader. Perhaps Psylocke then moves up to take his place at the top of the X-Men org chart. Or maybe a returning Jean Grey does. The question then would become, who might be the next “Executive Officer“?
X-Men lore is all about planting seeds and finding out what sticks, and the latest issue of the franchise’s flagship series has planted an intriguing seed by naming”Executive Officer” as a key position.
X-Men #39 will be available Wednesday, October 14, 2026.
Who do you think should be the next leader of the X-Men? How about the next Executive Officer?
