Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are returning to familiar territory by composing the score for David Fincher’s The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth — their sixth collaboration with the director on a feature film. The pairing was revealed yesterday (Nov. 2) on the movie’s poster, adding another chapter to one of contemporary cinema’s most fruitful director/composer partnerships.
Reznor and Ross first teamed with Fincher on 2010’s The Social Network, earning an Academy Award and Golden Globe for their score. They subsequently supplied the music for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2011), Gone Girl (2014), Mank (2020) and The Killer (2023). Their work on Dragon Tattoo also earned them a Grammy for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media.
Outside the Fincher partnership, Reznor and Ross have scored films including Bird Box, Soul, Patriots Day, Challengers (which won the Golden Globe for Best Original Score) and Queer. Ross has collaborated with Reznor since the early 2000s, including on the short-lived project Tapeworm, and has contributed to numerous Nine Inch Nails releases.
The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth is a sequel of sorts to Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, centering on Brad Pitt’s stuntman-turned-fixer. Written by Tarantino and directed by Fincher, the film picks up eight years after the events of Hollywood, placing Booth in 1977 Los Angeles, where his particular skill set remains useful to an entertainment industry with plenty of trouble to go around. The ensemble cast includes Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Timothy Olyphant and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
The film will open exclusively in IMAX on Nov. 25 for a two-week engagement before arriving on Netflix Dec. 23.
