Laura and Russell first crossed paths in 2006 at the Edinburgh Festival. She was 19 years old at the time, and Russel was a 31-year-old comedian making his way into being a household name.

They exchanged numbers and had a brief relationship, but eventually parted ways after a few months. Laura said she knew about Russell’s reputation with women, saying, “I wasn’t interested in having a relationship with him if he was sleeping with other people,” as reported by the BBC.

Laura Brand Was Her Husband’s Only In-Person Character Witness At His Trial

Russell, who was convicted of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault, told the court during the trial that it was difficult to find friends and associates who were willing to testify on his behalf.

Laura, who has steadfastly supported Russell since he was accused of sexual assault in 2023, was the sole character witness who testified in court.

“Russell, my husband, is caring, he is kind, he is a wonderful father to our children. He is an amazingly attentive husband,” Laura said, adding that she loves him “very much.” She acknowledged his difficulty remaining monogamous during their brief romance when they first met, but said that their marriage “has always been honest,” as reported by Grazia Daily.

Immediately following his conviction, Russell turned to his wife and said, “Laura, I love you.”
