Anne Hathaway’s new movie, Mother Mary, is being review bombed for two very different reasons.
Mother Mary, which is being released through A24, arrives in United States theaters this month. Written and directed by David Lowery, the film stars Hathaway, Michaela Coel, Hunter Schafer, and FKA Twigs, among others.
The synopsis for the movie reads, “Long-buried wounds rise to the surface when iconic pop star Mother Mary (Anne Hathaway) reunites with her estranged best friend and former costume designer Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel) on the eve of her comeback performance.”
Why is Anne Hathaway’s new movie getting review bombed?
Mother Mary currently has a 3.6 score on IMDB — which is extremely low for the site — despite the movie not having actually been released. Approximately 62.4 percent of the submitted reviews have given the movie only one star.
The film seems to have upset some people who have strong religious beliefs, as they appear to be review bombing it for portraying Christianity in a way that makes them uncomfortable. A one-star review on the site reads, “Mother Mary is a bold but deeply troubling film. Its portrayal feels like a mockery of the Virgin Mary, a figure sacred to millions of Christians worldwide. Rather than offering thoughtful reimagining, it crosses into disrespect. Offensive and disappointing for believers.”
Additionally, fans of American electropop duo Mothermary, stylized as MOTHERMARY, may potentially be contributing to the negative reviews. In February, the band posted an Instagram video that says they were “debating calling [their] lawyer” to sue Anne Hathaway for ripping off the themes of their art and their aesthetic without their permission. It doesn’t appear that anything has come from this; however, many in the comments of the post encourage the duo to go forward with a lawsuit.
It’s worth noting that, at the time of this publication, the film has a 75 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes with 36 reviews. Mother Mary is opening in limited theaters this weekend before it goes nationwide on April 24, 2026.
