This photo was an unposed moment in a shoot last year with Robert De Niro at the Bowery Hotel in New York City. The Bowery, both the street and the hotel, sit at the northern and western edge of the Lower East Side and strolling distance from Little Italy, areas where he grew up and roamed as a youngster.
“It’s a very thoughtful image. Bob was in a reflective mood that day, and he was looking at all the places out the window that were part of his youth,” says Charlie, remembering taking this shot.
“Bob, as he likes to be called, is one of the coolest guys you will ever meet, no fuss, no drama. I just played Sinatra while we worked, and we had a beautiful shoot.”
Charlie is internationally known and highly regarded, an artist born and raised in the very twee (and wonderfully preserved) college town of Cambridge in England. He took up photography at university and never looked back.
