The Witcher Books Nonetheless Have One Massive Geralt Tale The Video games & Netflix Cannot Inform

It’s understandable why many fans are ambivalent about The Witcher‘s future, with the video games transitioning away from Geralt and making Ciri the main protagonist in The Witcher 4. Ever since Andrezj Sapkowski’s books first introduced us to The Continent with The Last Wish, Geralt has been the face of the franchise and has captured the hearts of fans in nearly every adaptation to date.

Each version of The Witcher has explored a relatively specific portion of Geralt’s long life. CD Projekt Red’s games effectively continue his story beyond the events of Sapkowski’s original saga, while Netflix’s adaptation largely pulls from the established adventures of the books, albeit within its own continuity. Even Crossroads of Ravens, Sapkowski’s latest novel, jumps backward to an 18-year-old Geralt only beginning his career as a monster hunter.

Interestingly, there’s a long stretch of Geralt’s history that remains largely untouched and is likely only to be revealed from Sapkowski’s ongoing novels. The years between the inexperienced teenage witcher of Crossroads of Ravens and the seasoned White Wolf readers meet throughout The Last Wish are the biggest question mark in Geralt’s history. While Sapkowski gives us hints at what happened in those missing years, a dedicated story focused on that era could tell one of the most important Geralt stories to date.

Geralt’s Most Important Witcher Story Has Yet To Be Told

The years between Crossroads of Ravens and The Last Wish may be the most important unexplored period in Geralt’s life. They represent the point where he becomes the character fans actually recognize. In Crossroads of Ravens, Geralt is still only 18 years old, relatively inexperienced, and beginning to discover what life on the Path really entails. By the time of his better-known adventures in The Last Wish, however, roughly 20 years have passed, and understandably, he has become a far more cynical, capable, and morally complicated monster hunter and established a real reputation across The Continent.

Something clearly happened during those roughly two decades to reshape him substantially. Geralt begins his career with idealistic dreams about what witchers are supposed to be, only to inevitably discover that humans can be far more dangerous than monsters. Exploring this period could show us which specific contracts, betrayals, failures, friendships, etc. gradually eroded his youthful idealism.

It could also explain how Geralt developed the personal code that defines him, including his reluctance to choose between competing evils and his complicated relationship with trying to stay neutral. Seeing those lessons unfold would provide crucial context for the older Geralt, and it’s unlikley we get a proper glimpse at that time period outside of Sapkowski’s books. Fortunately, the author has something in the works, and we may actually see Geralt’s evolution after Crossroads sooner than you thought.

The Next Witcher Book May Well Be A Crossroads Sequel

Sapkowski’s next Witcher book could very well provide a much clearer picture of these missing years, particularly because everything the author has said recently suggests he isn’t finished exploring Geralt in the slightest. At Poland’s Copernicon festival in September 2026, Sapkowski confirmed that he is working on another book centered on Geralt and said he hopes to finish it by the end of 2027, although he cautioned that those plans could still change. No title, release date, or setting has been announced yet.

However, Sapkowski has left the door wide open to returning to Geralt’s earlier life. When recently asked whether there was room for additional stories exploring the character’s formative years after Crossroads of Ravens, his answer was that the “sky is the limit.” He has also said he is considering writing more short stories, potentially giving him several different ways to revisit portions of Geralt’s past, particularly in that 20-year window.

Sapkowski described Crossroads of Ravens as a story about Geralt’s growth, with youthful idealism colliding with harsh reality and his decisions gradually beginning to “forge a legend.” A follow-up set several years later could continue and expand on the premise, showing more of the experiences that transformed an inexperienced teenage witcher into the hardened Geralt readers eventually encounter throughout The Last Wish.

While there’s still no definitive roadmap for Sapkowski’s future Witcher books, his recent comments make Geralt’s still largely unexplored early career an obvious possibility, and one that could finally give fans some long-awaited answers to the beloved character’s history.
